ARE YOU LIVING WITH SHARP PAIN?

   EXCRUCIATING PAIN!

Most of us at one time or another have heard a friend or relative say the pain between their shoulders was so severe it felt like a knife in their back. When this knife-like pain is located between the shoulder blades, just the taking in of a deep breath can be excruciating. This condition can be aggravated by the simple acts of twisting, bending forward, backward, and lateral bending.

   LIMITING YOUR ACTIVITY

These bouts of pain may severely limit your ability to do the things you love. This loss of quality of life is something you shouldn’t settle for. We believe you should feel your very best.

Limiting your activity can also result in weight gain and poor health. We all need exercise, but when it hurts it’s even harder to make in to the gym.

  TENDERNESS

Tenderness of the vertebrae of the spine is usually the result of spinal subluxations (misaligned vertebrae). The degree of tenderness (pain) is usually in direct proportion to the severity and chronicity of the subluxation(s). Removing or reducing the subluxation is somewhat like straightening teeth with braces it is usually a gradual process.

   ADDRESS THE PAIN

Often times, a patient may misinterpret the absence of pain to mean their condition has been corrected. Like straitening teeth, it may be many months before the vertebrae and the spine have returned to normal. As the correction be begins, the first step of progress is the disappearance of pain.

After the pain has been addressed we want to focus on correcting any misalignments and strengthening what we have helped.

   WE LOVE TO HELP!

If you know of someone suffering with stabbing pain between their shoulders, they may not have to suffer. Please share this newsletter with them and suggest they call our office for an appointment.

INJURIES RELATED TO AN AUTO ACCIDENT

Inclement weather can cause many auto accidents. People often do not pay attention to the road conditions and find themselves unable to stop or avoid a collision.

   WHIPLASH

Whiplash is a common injury from an auto accident. It simply refers to injuries to the neck caused when the neck is suddenly “whipped” on direction then another. IF you have seen video of auto accident simulation you will notice how much motion is produced in an accident.

   WHAT IS INJURED

If you suffer from a whiplash you will most likely have a sprain/strain of the neck. The ligaments that help support and protect the vertebrae in your neck are torn which is referred to as a sprain.

The joints in the back of the spine, called facet joints, are covered by ligaments called facet capsules. These are susceptible to whiplash.

   SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

The most common symptoms of whiplash are pain and stiffness in the neck. These symptoms are generally found in the areas that are “whiplashes.” For example, during a whiplash, first the head is lifted up from the upper-cervical spine. This creates a sprain/strain in the region just below the skull, where symptoms usually occur. Symptoms may also commonly be seen in the front and back of the neck. Turning the head often makes the pain discomfort worse.

Headache, especially at the base of the skull, is also a common symptom, seen in more than two thirds of patients. These headaches may be one-sided (unilateral) or experienced on both sides (bilateral). In addition, the pain and stiffness may extend down into the shoulders and arms, upper back, and even the upper chest.

   PROMPT TREATMENT

It’s important that you get treatment if you have been involved in an auto accident. It is also very wise to see us as soon as possible so we can make sure you get the treatment you require.

RUPTURED DISK

If you had to have a ruptured disk to have the most severe form of back pain, then most cases of severe back pain would be from a ruptured disk and would probably not respond very well to Chiropractic care. Fortunately, that is generally not true. Very few self-diagnosis of “ruptured disk” are truly ruptured.

   WHAT IS A DISK!

A disk is somewhat like a doughnut with a jelly like material in the center of the doughnut. A rupture would be when the jelly like material was forced or squeezed to the outer edge of the doughnut (disk).

The jelly-like substance is called the nucleus pulposus. It generally takes a rather severe injury to rupture the nucleus pulposus. People have fallen off buildings and have gone through automobile windshields without rupturing a disk, but they may have ended up with back pain so severe they couldn’t bend or walk.

The disk functions as a cushion between each of the vertebrae of the spine. Without these cushions we would be almost a foot shorter.

The disks help to separate the vertebrae so there is enough space for the spinal nerves to exit. They also help cushion the spine from everyday jars and jolts.

Without the disks, we would not have the flexibility to twist and bend.

IF THE DISK IS NOT RUPTURED, WHAT IS THE PAIN?

The disk can still be a problem, however, when then spine curves and/or twists, the disk (cushion) can be compressed on one side forcing it to bulge and press against a spinal nerve, causing pain.

A vertebrae which has been forced out of its normal position, without affecting the disk, can also irritate or pinch a nerve, causing pain. When a vertebrae twist, slip or curve, the supporting muscles can spasm so severely that it is difficult to differentiate the severely spasmed muscle pain from pain caused by pinched or squeezed nerves from a disk or vertebrae.

The chiropractic approach in the analysis and care of back pain, including the so-called ruptured disk, is the preferred drugless, non-surgical treatment of the day.

WHY CONTINUE TREATMENT

Many people think of chiropractic merely as a treatment of their conditions, feeling that when symptoms disappear there is no further need for chiropractic care. Their belief is far from the truth.

We are interested not only in restoring your health, but also in maintaining it. We know from study and experience that once vertebrae have gotten out of alignment and have been allowed to remain in incorrect position over a long period, the bones just as easily can slip out of line after proper chiropractic adjustments and that the correct position of your vertebrae must be kept until the bones will stay in place naturally.

   KEEP YOUR APPOINTMENT

It is very important to keep your appointment. Each treatment is designed to improve your spinal health. If you miss an appointment you run the risk of causing the treatment to take longer.

We love it when you come see us but be sure that is not the only reason we set appointments for you to continue treatment. We want to see you reach the best possible healthy conditions.

If you have any questions about treatment, please feel free to ask. We love serving you and your family and are committed to your good health!

GOOD HEALTH TIP: LIMIT SALT INTAKE WITH LEMONS

Reducing salt intake by 3g per day lowers blood pressure, but the effect is doubled with a 6g per day reduction and tripled with a 9g per day reduction.

A taste test conducted at the University of California showed that volunteers thought lemon spiked, low-salt tomato juice tasted just as salty as the regular juice. The reason is that lemon juice fools the taste receptors in the brain, adding a little zest that makes us think the food has been salted.

Lemon juice can also be a very good salt substitute in soups, on chicken, fish, and in vegetable juices.

Other good ways to reduce salt intake include; limiting intake of salt intake of salty foods such as chips, nuts and salty sauces. Read food labels and choose processed foods that have lower sodium levels and use less salt when cooking.
